- Build a football field for the sports programs at the Chukwani School. The goal of the field is to provide a space where boys and girls can play sports together, building relationships to promote more peaceful gender dynamics. In Zanzibar, one of the only public spaces where men and women interact socially is on the football pitch. This field will be an incredible resource to develop the student community at the Chukwani school!
- Build a netball court for the girls-specific after school programming at the school. Netball is the most popular sport played by young woman in Zanzibar and in most of Africa. This court will create the town’s first girls-specific recreation space. With the establishment of this court, girls will be able to participate in organized, year-round sports programming and netball competitions.
- Establish the schools comprehensive recreation program, which will consist of organized clinics and team play in football, netball, and other programming. SHCAB volunteers will not only be in Zanibar to help the girls at the school build these new recreation spaces, but they will also work with local officials and the school’s staff to design the school’s new after school and community recreation programs. SHCAB volunteers will be providing the school with new sports equipment and supplies, while simultaneously running clinics and organizational sessions to empower the young boys and girls at Chukwani school to work together and take ownership of their new facilities and programming!
