Suzdal, Russia 2012

Picture
In the summer of 2012, SHCAB traveled to Suzdal, Russia where it helped establish a comprehensive sports and wellness program for the 500 students at the community's school/orphanage.  Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Davis Projects for Peace Foundation and many generous donations from SHCAB supporters, Project Suzdal was an overwhelming success and its effects are certain to endure long after the project's completion.  Be sure to check out the Suzdal 2012 Blog for photos, stories and more insight.  View the Project Gallery.

    Project achievements included:
  • Raising $25,000 in funding for the initiative
  • Constructing an asphalt sports court complete with basketball hoops and a volleyball net
  • Clearing a half-size soccer field and assembling soccer goals in the schoolyard
  • Providing over 50 soccer balls and basketballs, jump ropes and pinnies to the school
  • Working collaboratively with the school's principal and faculty to plan and implement the new sports and wellness program for all students
  • Creating, preparing and distributing anti-alochol, anti-smoking and anti-drunk driving posters and materials throughout the school and community as part of the new wellness program
  • Leading a 2-week sports camp for the community's children
  • Promoting an environment of cultural acceptance and exchange with the children, families and local government of Suzda
