Haiti: Phases of Empowerment
Phase 1: SHCAB volunteers traveled to Jeremie, where they immersed themselves in the school and town community. SHCAB established a project leadership team among the elected students at the school. With the students, SHCAB volunteers led focused seminars and group working sessions to help guide the youth through each stage of construction and resource development. The youth rose to the occasion, engineering an incredibly beautiful field and thorough project plans/contingency plans. SHCAB also joined hands with the leadership team to physically break ground and begin the excavating of the field. The students at Idejen threw a welcome ceremony for the SHCAB volunteers where they showcased their culture and talents. In the well-attended ground breaking ceremony, SHCAB volunteers also presented the students with the first installment of football equipment and field-construction specific tools. Phase 2: SHCAB volunteers returned to Jeremie for phase 2 of the project. The volunteers addressed the youth at the school, led a progress assessment seminar, organized small-group phase 2 planning sessions, helped prepare the field for the next stage, and even played in a ceremonial game on the field space with the latest addition of soccer equipment. The trip was extremely successful, and it was very inspiring to see the youth’s enthusiasm in action and to enjoy the strong friendships being cultivated between the SHCAB volunteers and their Haitian peers. Phase 2 is almost complete, and the project is on pace for its completion early this winter. To view the phase two photo gallery, click here.
Phase 3: SHCAB volunteers will return to Jeremie for an opening celebration of wellness and cultural exchange. The opening of the field marks a symbol of hope for the youth and families of Jeremie. SHCAB volunteers will be delivering the school with all the equipment necessary to launch the new soccer league, with the capacity to incorporate all of the students at the school. SHCAB volunteers will also lead football and health/nutrition seminars with the new soccer teams.
